I am writing to request your consideration of my application for the post XX.  Based on my education, skills, civil service experience  and current private sector experience, I believe that I would be an outstanding candidate for this position. I have also over the years progressively taken up responsibilities of increasing complexity that required analytical, application and strategic thinking. With over XX years working in the marine and coastal environment, I believe I can be recognised as expert in this field and related sectors.

I have around XX years of experience in management of organisations both with governments and internationally dealing with complex agendas across the related sectors including their business spaces. I spent XX years implementing a developmental GEF funded World Bank  Project in XX. Prior to that, I was the [insert position) at the XXX (name organisation) (with a staff of 120), which is the executive arm of the Government of XX in the development and management of oceans, coastal zones and fisheries resources. As part of this function I also participated on a number of management boards, which includes XX, XX, and XX. In this regard, I have a sound knowledge of financing but also the issues across those sectors.

In all of the above roles, I had a very strategic function where I have interacted with and advised the private sector, civil societies, policy makers and politicians on marine affairs. In doing so, I have prepared development plans, technical, policy and strategy documents dealing with policy change and Implementation. An example XXXX….. . Within this process I had to work across sectors in partnership with other projects to achieve the project’s results. As part of the XX Project I set up Masters (MSc.) capacity building programme, which graduated around 20 MSc students from the region’s universities.

I’ve have worked across sectors such as ocean management, climate change, coastal pollution, aquaculture, biodiversity and food security issues. I have experience in the development of small scale, semi-industrial to industrial fisheries in identifying key policy and business intervention areas for sustaining livelihoods, poverty reduction, national development/investment, and upgrading and up scaling of producer organisations.

The key experiences include:

  • Managing large teams, prepare work programme and budgets, coordinate and implementation an agreed work plan including developing technical cooperation programmes;
  • Project management (provide oversight, review and coordinate activities within countries and across borders);
  • Engaging in policy discussion and advise on technical and political consequences to determine priority actions);
  • Engaging in resource mobilization e.g. donor agencies (list them)
  • Monitoring and evaluation (develop monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework to monitor performance, and implementation of results based approach and budgeting);
  • Managing multicultural and technical staff/teams; organising meetings/workshop and participating in high level meetings/conferences, and providing leadership and guide change management programmes to ensure efficiency.

I have a fairly good knowledge of World Bank programmes and its agencies having been involved over the years with a number of projects of UNDP and FAO

In terms of my competencies, I’m very familiar and experienced in diverse multicultural and development context having worked in (country X) for four years and my engagement with the (name the organisation) membership at political level. My leadership skills include a strong focus on communication, sharing knowledge, innovation, mentorship and providing diverse opportunities to staff members to engage more and deliver according to the goals of the organisation and/or programmes. 

I’m convinced that I have the experience, knowledge, and capacity to oversee, support, plan, coordinate and lead the Bank’s XXX development framework.
