Sample cover letter for Internship position at barclays

POSITION:

intern

Dear Cathie Mangiardi,

I learned through the McGill Desautels Career Portal that you are currently looking for an Equity Research Associate to contribute to your investment team. Having discussed Fidelity at length in my Investment Management, Derivatives and Trading Securities Classes, I am no stranger to your firm or the impressive work that you do. Having spoken to two Associates in your research department I have gained first hand insight into what life at Fidelity truly entails, I am convinced that Fidelity is the place for me.

Stocks. The first stock I ever invested in was Disney (DIS). This is because it was an industry leader, had a lot of growth potential and for obvious reasons my love for Star Wars made it the number one company on my list. I invested a thousand dollars on February 13th 2015 ($104.17) and bought 10 stocks. My Disney Stocks did so well that on July 31st 2015 ($120) I decided to buy 10 more. The next day my stocks crashed and I regretted buying and not selling. I did not see this as a failure of my asset management skills but an opportunity to learn. I learned two very important lessons. The first lesson I learned was that I needed to diversify my portfolio and the second was to trade with discipline.

I manage a personal portfolio of $XXX out of which 80% I have invested in small and mid-cap stocks. I have invested in these stocks because I believe they are undervalued and have good management teams. The rest of the 20% is in cash, I only use this money for event driven strategies. June 27 was a fire sale for me. I used the remaining 20% to buy large-cap stocks that were greatly affected and that would bounce back the next day. These past 3 months my return on investment has been 9.67% with a volatility of 3.3%.

Twilio and Energous are the two companies that have given me the most return and I can attribute those returns to my momentum strategy. Six Flags and JetBlue are the only two companies that have given me negative returns. I believe these companies will double in value in the coming three years and for that I am willing to attain some short term losses.

In addition to my stock investing I have also been quite active within McGill. My genuine interest in finance can be seen in my acting as a finance tutor of the MUS tutorials club. Through this club we strive to inform other students of the potential of global markets and foster their knowledge in investment thesis. In addition to acting as a leader in the promotion of this club I have also acted as a part of a team, football at McGill at an Intramural level.

As my time as McGill nears its completion I am eager to follow my passions and begin my career as a stock investor. I hope to combine the skills I have learned in class with my strong analytical skills that I have honed through my work experiences and extracurricular activities to add value to not only Fidelity, but also their clients.

Best Regards Hamza Jaffer
