I am writing with regards to the Women in Finance programme. (1st Year Program: Women in Finance (EMEA Only) - London)

I am a second year student in University of Oxford. I am keen on pursuing a career in the financial sector, especially in mergers and acquisition.

Despite my unusual background reading Engineering, I am offered a place to participate in the Oxford finance lab which will acquire me essential skills to produce a M&A report and participate in the Bridgepoint challenge which requires production of an investment proposal and a finance & Valuation Model.

I am self motivated, efficient and a quick learner. Studying in Oxford prepares me to work in a challenging environment. Coming from an non-financial background motivates me to increase working efficiency to allow time to read about recent financial news and expand my financial knowledge in the busy schedule of my degree. I also self-learnt a programming language, and an extra M3 paper in A levels. I consider myself a team player and this is demonstrated by working as a team manager in Junior Achievement Company Programme mentioned in my CV attached.

I believe M&A drives efficiency in companies due to increased market share and thus increase in bargaining power in raw materials, maximizing profits for the companies, which in turns translates to more research and developments and better product quality for consumers. I am particularly interested in technology M&A activities, which is increasing in recent years. Hardware industry is especially active earlier this year with Intel acquiring Altera and Avago acquiring Broadcom. The fast growing need of technology led to a great opportunity in the tech industry, and created a high demand in company growth in oder to leapfrog competitors. M&A is essential to quick growth and can cause synergies by consolidating duplicate resources, in result in improved products. The Intel/Altera case is one example. I believe M&A activities in the field will continue it’s growth and I am excited to participating in future transactions.

From Bloomberg news, Citi suggested that time’s ripe for mid-cap dealmaking and selected U.K. mid-caps that could become targets, which gave a great forecast on M&A activities in the UK. Being ranked top 5 in the global M&A ranking with 666,419 $m shows itself as a global leading company in M&A. It would be a pleasure if I could join Citi in the Women in Finance programme and have it as a pathway to achieving my goal of obtaining a position in your internship programme.
