In my academic career, I have had to conquer a variety of challenges and have developed strong and applicable skills. Because of the varied nature of my coursework, I can think in both qualitative and quantitative modes when working to complete projects or create solutions. In a multidisciplinary major such as PPE, I have gained experience in researching information and crafting it into detailed and informative reports or presentations. I have very strong written communication and editorial skills, as I have had to not only write academic papers, but also am a contributing writer for the Daily Pennsylvanian, Penn's student newspaper, and Penn Appetit, Penn's student food magazine.
My experience as an intern at VeryApt has given me relevant experience in an office environment. As the company was a start up with few employees, I had a lot of individual responsibility and autonomy. This resulted in the ability to propose and execute ideas that I thought would be valuable to the company, such as the expansion of their blog, additional features that helped with the efficiency of their product, and direct communication with both business partners and clients. I performed extensive research on emerging housing markets throughout the United States, as well as gathered and organized information on relevant employers and management companies in major cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee, and Boston. Not only did I perform research and complete independent projects, I also constantly communicated with clients and brokers to schedule appointments, which honed my time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
The experiences I have had as a Varsity Athlete on the Track and Field team speak to my determination, tenacity, and my ability to work as a team player. Being an athlete means I am extremely driven to complete my goals, and has developed a high work ethic and standard of achievement. On a daily basis, I not only have to push my personal physical limits, but inspire and encourage my teammates to do the same. Because Track is, to a great degree, an individual sport, I have been challenged to find ways to create a cohesive atmosphere. I have learned to think beyond my own individual achievements or failures and be there for my teammates as a supportive and positive influence. Being on the Track and Field team has taught me to strive for achievement, to function under great pressure, to work well with others, and to efficiently manage my time between academics and athletics.
