As developed by Edwin Sunderland, differential association theory attempts to identify criminal actions as learned behaviors. Sunderland was primarily interested in delinquency and delinquency groups when he developed this theory and as a result cultivated it to explain that people aren’t born criminal.. The first point of differential association theory states that criminal behavior is learned through interactions. From the very beginning as children, we are shaped with social norms in mind. We learn morals, manners, and as sunderland argues, in the same way we learn criminalistic behavior, simply by observing. One thing Sunderland points out is that learning of criminal behavior occurs within an individuals most personal relationships. So for example, this includes family, friends, any other possible influences. So how do individuals decide to take part in criminal behavior? According to the theory, people weigh their options in associations defined as favorable or unfavorable. Once there is an excess of unfavorable definitions in violation of the law, an individual is considered to be criminal by Sunderland’s theory
