Being the only subject that provides one with the opportunity to wallow in myriad worlds and live myriad lives in a single one, English Literature has been my escape from reality for a long time now. The various characters which we get to connect with through English Literature have fascinated me since I was 12, when the whole series of Famous Five and Secret Seven seemed like a different world to me. Ever since, reading has become a part of me, to say that I was merely “passionate” about reading is undermining my love for books.
Lately I decided to pursue English as a career and the story “Old Love” by Jeffrey Archer, which uses the United Kingdom as a setting for two students whose love for English I could relate to, paved the way for my strong urge to study English Literature. Out of the many books that I’ve read, one book that metamorphosed the way I perceived Literature was Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird”. The opportunity to analyze this book as a part of my course allowed me to see that Lee creates the perfect balance between a child’s innocent imagination and the hypocritical and cruel world of today, making one strain one’s brains to gain a deeper insight of the book.
My interest in the subject has driven me to participate in practically all the extra-curricular activities related to it. I have been the Head Debater of the debating team as well as the President of the Debating Club of the school. Not only have I actively participated in these activities, but I have also managed these events and many more as the Head Girl of my school, without falling back or neglecting my studies.
Besides pursuing English arduously at school, I have also indulged in some volunteer teaching. I ventured into free evening classes for children who could not afford proper or formal schooling and even adults who showed an interest to learn. I have also devoted plenty of time volunteering to work with blood camps, cancer walks, polio rally, aiding charitable homes and other social organizations as the President of the Rotary Interact Club at my school.
Being a fan of the Harry Potter series made me come across a quote which said,” Words are our most inexhaustible source of magic”. This single quote made me realize how empowered one is with a weapon of words and so with the help of a friend, I started writing a blog on topics that moved me.
To improve my writing and communication skills, I took internships with an editorial faculty of a magazine which assisted me in stimulating my interest in the subject. Most of my work in this internship comprised checking facts and acquiring the required information for articles.
Inspired by one of my English teachers at school, while perusing the pages of a book, I got into the habit to not only understand the story but also to find out the history, geography and everything else under the sun related to the story. This habit paved the way for my interest in Modern Languages. Apart from this, my love for books by Paulo Coelho also made me fall in love with cultures, traditions and languages of people around the globe. His books in particular have aroused in me a strong craving to travel to new cities, meet new people and, in his words, “make my own itinerary” to discover the city all over again for myself. Learning the spoken languages around the world would provide me with a better insight in the cultures prevalent there which I am highly interested in. Also, it would increase my career prospects in great measures.
Studying English and Modern Languages(German in particular as it interests me the most) in the country known for its quality of English, history and culture would enhance my writing and communication skills exceptionally. It would provide me with the golden opportunity to learn the subjects in the best environment possible with the most excellent faculty. Along with that, it would aid me in turning my dream of understanding the intricacies of both the subjects into reality.
