MOTIVATION LETTER
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” said Nelson Mandela.
Whenever the question of education is raised I remember a very good Armenian saying: “A well-worked out stone never remains on the ground.” The same is with people, if you are well-educated you will always be demanded. This is why I pay very much attention to the importance of a good education. For me education is a key to any door and it opens up windows to success and welfare.
Generally my interest in the English language grew after an unsuccessful experience which I had at school. A well-known professor from Great Britain was holding a competition of essays in Armenia and the student with the best essay would have an opportunity to visit Great Britain and have three weeks’ free English lessons. Unfortunately I did not win the prize but I was told that the professor wanted to have a conversation with me. It surprised me as I did not know what he was going to tell me. He said that the ideas in my essay were original and appealing, but I had to work at my language skills. He advised me to work harder and added that he saw a great language potential in me. This was the main reason why I decided to go deeper into the English language.
Entering Yerevan State University, Romance and Germanic Philology faculty enabled me to study the English language with all its deepness and richness. During the past years of my educational background I have studied various subjects which are related to Linguistics both in my native language and in English. However my interest in the subject increased after the course of Linguistics. Our professor of Linguistics kept telling us that Linguistics is not merely a scientific study of a language but a study of a human language. Her enthusiastic approach towards teaching the subject played an important role in my final decision of applying for the faculty of English Linguistics.
I am particularly keen on Sociolinguistics which is closely related to Linguistic Anthropology. It is amazing how society can have such an enormous effect on language use. For me Linguistics does not merely suggest learning linguistic rules, but it deals with such factors as age, gender, race. During communication it is not only necessary to use the right linguistic forms; one must take into consideration also the environment where the speech is made.
While studying in the department of Translation Studies I faced problems connected with cultural barrier. When transferring a text from the source language into the target one it is necessary to take into account the cultural differences. In the result of word for word translation a translator is unlikely to be clearly understood. The thorough study of Linguistics and namely Sociolinguistics will contribute to understanding nation’s characteristic features and the way of thinking.
While studying the peculiarities of the English language I came across some resemblances with my native language. The fundamental knowledge of Linguistic will be beneficial for studying the generalities and differences of the two languages. It would give me a chance to draw parallels between Armenian and English and find out some innovations in this sphere. Undoubtedly it would be of great importance for my nation.
My country is gradually developing in many spheres; economy, tourism, education, trade and the role of the English language is becoming vitally important. However the foreign language teaching methods are not that developed in Armenia and I would like to bring the gained knowledge and the obtained skills and ideas to my home country to contribute to the development of linguistic sphere in general. So the overall knowledge of the English language will be beneficial not only for me to make a successful career, but also for my country as she needs better and qualified professionals. I would like to have my little contribution to the welfare of my nation by opening my own English language centre where I would transmit my knowledge, language skills and practice to those who are really enthusiastic about it and willing to be good professionals. And as the famous saying has it "To get the education is our right, to spread the education is our duty". A master degree in English and American Studies will become a key stone on the way to the fulfillment of my dream.
