Sample cover letter for Internship position at sabanci holding
legal associate
I would like to share my motivation for joining the Jean Monnet Scholarship Programme. Currently, I am in my last year of Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts studies in Journalism at Istanbul Bilgi University. I am a high-honours, double-major student, and ranked second in my graduating class.
Studying at the United World College-USA took me on a life-changing journey and encouraged me to work towards a peaceful and sustainable future. As an undergraduate, I made every effort to implement this vision in my legal training. I focused on understanding the mechanisms of peaceful settlement of transnational disputes and the role of international organisations in framing the norms of development, arms control, human rights and transitional justice, as well as their ability to maintain peace and security.
To this end, I worked as legal counsel for multinational companies, pro bono legal clinics and human rights organizations; held a fellowship as a foreign news correspondent to better understand the social, political, economic and environmental issues affecting the international community, studied in the UK to gain a comparative legal perspective and participated in the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and Model United Nations Conferences.
Eventually, I aim to join a PhD programme, concentrating on the influence of international and European legal instruments on the protection of the rights of individuals. Living in a region suffering from decades of armed conflict, civilian casualties and human rights violations, I have seen the destructive toll of the denial of essential rights such as self-determination, protection of civilians in armed combat and the rights to liberty and a fair trial. I aim to preserve the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom and equality and work towards Turkey’s accession in The EU’s common area of security and justice while maintaining the core values of the Turkish national identity, culture and tradition.
My education and work experience enriched my intellectual capabilities and equipped me with the systematic approach required to succeed in an intensive graduate programme. Each step I took strengthened my belief in the potential of The EU laws and customs to protect human dignity and promote balanced and sustainable development. In this context, my main motivation to pursue a career in Transnational and European Law is my faith in a more liberal world order. Even though international politics have not been entirely hospitable to liberal ideas to date, I refuse to believe that the world cannot transform into a place governed by self-restraint, moderation and international cooperation.
With the education I hope to pursue on the Jean Monnet Scholarship, I aspire to expand my knowledge and understanding of the issues that are relevant in today’s globalised landscape such as, maintaining peace and security, protecting human rights and ensuring free movement of persons, services, goods and capital.I would like to concentrate on how The European Union law upholds these principles, and how it relates to and influences non-member states and other international organisations. I believe firmly understanding the dynamic interplay between national, European and international law and identifying the place of law in international affairs is the key to achieving these goals.
As a graduate student, I aim to develop an elaborate understanding of European and international law, as well as the rules that govern the European Union’s international relations. Although I have been fortunate to have had a terrific experience at private attorney partnerships, my long-term goal has always been a career in public service. As an international lawyer, I hope to work for international organisations and humanitarian NGOs to represent my country as best as I can.
I am confident the European and Public International Law LLM programmes I have been offered admission to, with their distinguished faculty, diverse student bodies and opportunities for substantive research, will train me formally to find justice in the purest sense of the word. Unfortunately, I cannot proceed with further studies since I lack the necessary funds to pursue a graduate programme. If selected for the Jean Monnet Scholarship, I will work with diligence and commitment to prove my worthiness and represent my country to the best of my ability. I would be honored to join the accomplished, original thinkers supported by the Jean Monnet Scholarship Programme and become a catalyst for the positive change I aspire to promote.
